My Favorites
Indie Films
Starry Eyes
Starry Eyes is a wonderful film by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch that tells the story of a young actress trying to get her big break. But how far is she willing to go to be a star? Alexandra Essoe is phenomenal in this film, and a great example of terrifying women in film. One of my all time favorites, I highly recommend it. You can watch it on ITunes, Amazon Prime, Vudu, YoutTube, Tubi, Shudder, and Google Play.
Southbound
Southbound is a horror anthology film revolving around five connected storylines of strange occurrences in the South. Genuinely terrifying and wonderfully made. You can watch it on Hulu, ITunes, Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play, and Shudder.
VFW
VFW is, in my opinion, what all zombie films wish to be. Joe Begos just keeps making hits with this beautiful and awesome film about a group of veterans that must battle a group of punks to protect a young girl, as well as their own turf. Super fun and heartfelt, with awesome action. You can see it now in theatres, on Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Google Play, or Vudu.
Podcasts
Nightmare University
Nightmare University is a Fangoria podcast hosted by Dr. Rebekah McKendry. The podcast covers a variety of different horrific material, including a full episode on Aquatic horror. It’s a wonderful crash course on the history and philosophy of horror. For those just starting to get into the horror community, I recommend the “Defining The Horror Genre”, “Lovecraft Horror”, and “Face Your Fears” episodes. Definitely check out the other Fangoria podcasts as well, Nightmare on Film Street, Shockwaves, and Attack of the Queerwolf are awesome.
Welcome To Night Vale
Welcome To Nightvale is a fictional radio show about the odd circumstances that befall the small town of Night Vale. It started in 2012, and gained a huge cult following. The creators-Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor- have also written multiple books and have live tours. Nothing in this podcast makes any sense, but that’s the fun of it. Really entertaining and full of random and strange stories. It’s also free on Apple Podcasts.
Forgotten Women Of Horror
SYFY Wire and FANGRRLS made an awesome podcast about Forgotten Women in different genres. The October episodes specialize in the horror genre. They talk about some of the most influential women in horror, that don’t get much credit for their work. It’s super interesting and features a lot of women most people have never even heard of. A great feminist podcast that covers the untold stories of many inspiring women. My personal favorites are the episodes on Sonya Levin and Lois Duncan. The other genre episodes are fantastic too!
Slash Her
Slash Her is a weekly podcast hosted by Adrian Rae and Stormy Monson. They discuss all things horror, from films to urban legends and conspiracies. The two bring an awesome voice to genre, and often cover social commentary within horror. They’re super funny and entertaining, and their Paranormal Party episode is super scary!
Knight Light
The Knight Light podcast is a horror movie podcast hosted by Prince Jackson, David Celarie, and Freddy Nuti. These three “knights” cover a ton of different horror films and ask the question “why horror?” They’re hilarious and have really interesting conversations about genre. I especially love the Scooby Doo On Zombie Island episode.
The Necronomi.com
Hosted by James Sabata and Don Guillory, The Necronomi.com is a great podcast that analyzes the social messages of horror films. With a new episode every week, The Necronomi.com covers a huge range of movies with tons of guest speakers. Sabata and Guillory bring awesome viewpoints to their analysis and discuss many issues within society. I recommend the Becky episode , you might hear somebody familiar :)
Magazines and News
Fangoria (of course)
Fangoria is a horror magazine that has been around since 1979. If anything’s happening in the horror world, chances are Fangoria knows about it. They’re also a production company that has made awesome films, including VFW and Satanic Panic. They are the number one place for horror news, and my personal favorite.
Bloody Disgusting
Bloody Disgusting is a great horror website that has news on all the latest horror media. They have awesome video game news in particular. They are a production company as well, with titles like V/H/S.
Dread Central
Dread Central is an awesome website for horror updates. They have great interviews and podcasts with people from all aspects of the horror world. I love their convention coverage. They are also a production company.
